What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Review ★★★★½

Wow, that was one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen. From the music to the structure and script. But my favourite part of the documentary was the Writer’s Room to develop a hypothetical 1st episode of season 8.

The structure of the doc was great alternating between Ira’s retrospective, the actors, fan interviews and, the beginning of season 8. The interviews were honest and did a good job of their attachment to the series and friendships with each other, they also incorporated just enough references and other comedic jokes and breaks of the 4th wall.

The production was also great, the music and cinematography were outstanding. The pairing of the music with the dialogue was on point. The original songs made me cry, the lyrics were great, and Max Grodenchik was great as always. The song at the beginning (I Left My Quark and Captain Sisko) made me reminisce on memories of DS9 and the song at the end with Max, Armin, Jeff and, Casey (What We Left Behind) made me laugh and cry simultaneously.

Lastly, (without spoiling anything) Season 8 was great I love how they made controversial decisions and making it darker. I liked the almost comic book like animation style. It was also interesting to be able to see in the Writer’s Room and how the relationships stood the test of time.

The one change I’d make is including James Darren music and also more original music in general.
